SINGAPORE, November 29, 2017 – Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific’s head of corporate sustainability for Asia-Pacific, Janet Neo, spoke at the panel discussion on Responsible Consumption and Production at the 6th Responsible Business Forum held from 21 – 23 November. The forum was co-hosted by Global Initiatives and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to bring together over 800 influential leaders and change makers from across the region to map the progress and exchange ideas for accelerating the action and impact around the 17 SDGs.
Since the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, initiatives to implement this global blueprint have been at the centre of sustainability efforts of all leading stakeholders.
During the panel discussion, Neo shared that an integrated approach, where governments, businesses and consumers work together to integrate their efforts into the entire value chain, is the most powerful answer to managing e-waste and its harmful effects the public is facing.
Neo and the panellists discussed how companies need to look at their operations and find opportunities to build the SDGs as a key focus into their end-to-end processes. Fuji Xerox has a number of practices embedded within their operations to help intensify the push for meeting the SDGs. The company promotes zero landfill, invests in advanced waste management facilities and recently had its CO2 emission reduction target, aimed to achieve a 30 percent reduction in the volume of CO2 emitted across entire product lifecycle (Scope1,2,3) *1, approved by the international environmental initiative, Science Based Targets *2.
The panel discussion also emphasised the need for tracking the progress on SDG implementation and results. Speaking about the measurement tools, Neo shared that international standards such as GRI and the CDP reporting are good ways of analysing the progress of companies. Both GRI and CDP measures waste management disclosures and play a crucial role supporting businesses to set strategies and plans to develop circular activities in their value chain. Similar to the implementation of SDG goals, measuring the impact would require an integrated approach, including public sector intervention to support policy-making and setting up infrastructure eco-system and partnerships to accelerate national-wide recycling capabilities.
Note 1: Scopes1, 2 and 3 signify categories for calculating the volume of greenhouse gas emissions
Scope1: Direct emissions from the organization's factories, offices, etc. (emissions generated when burning fuel)
Scope2: Emissions from the consumption of thermal energy, electricity, or other sources of energy purchased by the organization (emissions caused at the time of generating the electricity purchased)
Scope3: Emissions from the supply chain under the organization's activities (emissions at the time of raw material procurement, product transportation, product use, and product disposal)
Note 2: The Science Based Targets initiative was launched in September 2014 as a collaboration between the CDP, World Resources Institute, the World Wide Fund for Nature, and the United Nations Global Compact, aimed at promoting science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to keep global temperature increases below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial temperatures. In November 2016, the Paris Agreement, aimed at keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius, went into effect as an international framework on climate change.
