Behind the Story

On the development of VoiceNavi Mobile, a visually impaired employee participated from the prototype stage as verifying voice reading with the engineer.

They looked back on their thoughts and struggles in the development

Yamada:
Nowadays, smartphones have become indispensable items for both personal and business activities.
Myself included, an increasing number of visually impaired people use smartphones with the voice reading function. It is convenient since I can use an MFP via my smartphone I usually use and feel secure with it. I no longer get stressed to keep the next person waiting as I can configure necessary settings at my desk, and all I have to do in front of the MFP is hold my smartphone over it.

However, users can enjoy such benefits on the condition that voice reading works properly. I, as a visually impaired person, thoroughly checked whether I can operate an MFP following voice guidance from the prototype stage.
Particularly by verifying it with Kawamura, the engineer, we were able to find the cause immediately if a problem occurred. We clarified what we can and cannot do technically after he understood my requests, and then he responded quickly to what we can do.

From now, I would like to create further improved VoiceNavi Mobile to make customers happy and I will contribute to its realization.

Kawamura:
Upon the development of an application available also for visually impaired users, I learned widely about universal design along with technical aspects including voice reading. Some household electric appliances allow you to operate them even when your hands are busy: it is called “Hands Free”. The target of the application I was going to develop was “Eyes Free”, which should be usable without eyesight.

It was my first experience in developing an application in cooperation with a visually impaired user verifying operations and it brought me various findings. Things that seemed difficult for him were rather easy, but text entry was much more difficult than expected and it was challenging.

As for operations on an MFP, on the other hand, many customers use MFPs with the same settings every time so they can register frequently used settings with Favorites of VoiceNavi Mobile for easier operation. Yamada was very satisfied with this feature and I think that it will be helpful for other customers as well. I will keep working on it aiming to provide various types of customers with user-friendly operations.

Troubleshooting

Check the following items:
Talkback on the Android™ device is enabled.
The sound volume of the mobile device is set correctly.

Personal names and email addresses, and the names of favorite items may not be read out correctly due to the performance of the device.

Check the following items on the device in use:

  • Wireless LAN is enabled.
  • NFC is enabled. Check the connection method in the setting screen of the VoiceNavi Mobile application.
  • If Ethernet is used for the connection, check that the mobile device and MFP are connected to the same network.
  • If Wi-Fi Direct® is in use, check that the primary network is set for Wi-Fi Direct® on the MFP.

Note that communication with Wi-Fi Direct® connected MFPs may not be established with some Android™ devices.
In that case, perform the following procedure:
Go to [Settings] > [Wi-Fi] > [Advanced] and here, disable functions that may cause unstable Wi-Fi connection. In addition, check the NFC settings for the printer or MFP.

Check that you can access CentreWare Internet Services*1 by entering the IP address of the printer or MFP in the address bar of the web browser on the Android™ device you use. If you can access, it means that a connection has been established. A warning screen indicating that you cannot open the page appears if the connection fails. In case this screen appears, check the settings for the access point of wireless LAN.

  • *1: CentreWare Internet Services
The CentreWare Internet Services screen opens by entering the IP address of the printer (e.g. http://192.168.1.100) in the web browser.
  • Note: An IP address needs to be set on the MFP for using CentreWare Internet Services.
Check that an IP address is set and the HTTP protocol is enabled on the MFP by outputting the Configuration Report.
Check that the user name and password fields are blank in the settings for VoiceNavi Mobile on the terminal side. These fields should be left blank when local authentication is not used.
You cannot save files to a Folder for which no password is set. Set a password for the MFP Folder before using it.
The following messages appear only for the first time when connecting to an MFP where the self-signed certificate was issued. You can use VoiceNavi Mobile without any problems by pressing OK.
